At OC Dental Arts - Steven Go, DDS, we administer oral sedation by having patients take a prescription sedative pill approximately an hour before the appointment to help them relax during their treatment. The drug is a mild medication that is safe when taken as directed. Most patients would be so relaxed that they fall asleep during treatment and wake up when the process is finished.
The Benefits of Oral Sedation
Many patients are nervous when they visit the dentist, and some have extreme anxiety, making visiting the dentist impossible. Oral sedation helps to relieve this anxiety by relaxing the patient throughout the entire process. Most patients who experience anxiety during dental procedures find themselves calmer and more at ease after being administered oral sedation. This method can also help some patients to avoid feelings of nausea or vomiting that tend to occur with more involved procedures. Patients can trust that our dentist is highly qualified to administer this treatment safely, helping to eliminate any stress associated with the administration process.
Oral sedation is also advantageous for patients who need a lengthy amount of work done at one time. With this method, multiple treatments can be done in one sitting rather than requiring numerous visits to complete each task. This can be very beneficial to patients who have limited time and need the work completed quickly so they can continue their regular activities without skipping a beat. Our dentists can estimate how long your procedure will take based on the amount of work to be done.
How Does Oral Sedation Work?
Some patients need more than just local anesthetic for pain management. We offer an oral sedative for these patients to help them relax throughout their appointment while we provide treatment. We typically recommend an oral sedative for patients receiving multiple treatments at one time. The medication is taken about an hour before your procedure, so you'll feel relaxed and calm when you come into the office. You’ll still be awake and able to respond to questions, but you won’t feel any anxiety about your visit. Do note that many patients who choose this option often fall asleep! Once your appointment is over, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed. You can go back to your day in less than an hour.
